What You’ll Learn

Gain in-depth knowledge about Employee Ownership and the different forms EO can take, including traditional Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) structures, Worker Cooperatives, and Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs). Learn about each structure and how they uniquely benefit businesses and communities.

Benefits of Employee Ownership

  • Protect jobs: EO companies contribute to job security by providing a stable ownership structure that focuses on employee welfare and longevity, rather than short-term gains, reducing the likelihood of layoffs during economic downturns.

  • Increase community wealth: By allowing employees to become owners, EO spreads out wealth-building opportunities across the workforce, leading to more robust local economies and enhanced community well-being.

  • Create a more vibrant, inclusive economy: EO paves the way for a diverse economic landscape by ensuring employees from all walks of life have an opportunity to own a stake in the organization, contributing to economic equality and inclusion.

Different forms of Employee Ownership

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP): AnESOP is a retirement benefit plan that provides employees with an ownership interest in the organization. This arrangement encourages increased productivity and loyalty as employees work to improve the organization’s performance as well as their own financial futures.

  • Worker Cooperatives: Worker cooperatives are democratically run organizations that are owned and governed by their employees. Each employee has an equal vote in major decisions, aligning organizational success with employee welfare and engagement.

  • Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs): EOTs are designed to hold a controlling interest in a company for the benefit of its employees, combining the benefits of traditional ownership with a focus on long-term employee welfare and company success, without requiring individual employees to buy shares directly.
